Urban Renewal Group is exploring new ways to revitalise Melbourne’s older apartment buildings. The concept draws on redevelopment models that have already been used successfully in cities around the world, and members of our team have been directly involved in similar projects overseas.

Across Melbourne, many apartment buildings were built decades ago. While they remain structurally sound, they often no longer meet modern expectations for design and accessibility. From our experience internationally, we’ve seen that many of these buildings don’t need to be replaced — they can be thoughtfully improved.

Every building is different, and any opportunity must be considered carefully with the owners and residents involved. The aim is to explore ways buildings can be upgraded, and in many cases add a new floor, while respecting the people who live there and the character of the neighbourhood.
Inspired by Global Urban Renewal Models
Around the world, cities such as Berlin, Barcelona, Vancouver, Tel Aviv and more have successfully revitalised ageing apartment buildings through carefully planned redevelopment programs. In many cases, older buildings have been strengthened, modernised, and sometimes expanded with additional levels, creating new housing while improving the quality of the existing homes.
